Which Way Is the Wind Blowing Today?

By Melanie Bettinelli

Today the wind
whistles round
the window
frames, billows
the curtains
into the room.

Tonight
the wind herds
clouds to cover
the shining
moon and
silver stars.

The wind is rainbearer,
delivering mud puddles
and cold-damp
from somewhere
far to the west.

The wind caresses
treetops, leaf
by leaf by
new green leaf
—and whispers
in each ear
its secret name.

The wind tells
an endless
story—but only
the patient
will listen.

The wind never
tells where
it comes from, where
it's going—restless
wanderer, always
seeking, never
finding a home.
